MEGARONLOCATION: 11 VIA NEVIERA, PATERNOROLI The split from the past has taken place in this restaurant, which is now fully equipped with a function room and has experimental cooking methods available. This has largely been brought about by the return of Valentina, a wonderful young chef who learned to cook in France and brought back the secrets and the traditions of generations of master chefs. Recommended dishes include Tagliatelle, which are given a wonderful complexity by the "ravece" oil (a family recipe), set in a bed of spinach in a pumpkin basket, then cooked in moscato with glazed pear slices, as well as the beef cooked in the local, world-renowned Taurasi wine. In the room next to the dining hall lies a vinarium, for those who want to enjoy wine tasting. Also available are a selection of delicious local cheeses. The desserts are highly recommended. LA STALLA DELLA CAVEJALOCATION: VIA SANTISSIMA ANNUNZIATA 10, PIETRVAIRANO A unique dining experience. People living in the region travel from afar, attracted at the prospect of such dishes as pancotto (traditional boiled bread) and the restaurant's simple chicory soup. Indeed, the sole prospect of meeting the fantastic chef Bernardino Lombardo and tasting his amazing dishes is enough to make distance a mere detail to many people. While the dining atmosphere is simple and low-key, there is a great sense of tradition and antiquity, with old furnishings and a rustic Berkel stove that fit in perfectly with the decor. When it comes to the kitchen, the quality of the food owes its origins to the organic local produce and the expertise of the chef, whose utter aim is to serve up delicious, mouth-watering dishes. VALLE VERDELOCATION: 112 VIA PIANODARDINE, ATRIPALDA (3 km from Avellino) "Valleverde" is, for everyone that knows it well, "Aunt Pasqualina's restuarant". It was she who began the enterprise by serving the guests bean soup when the restaurant only had a seating capacity of 10 people in the early days. During the middle of the last century, little actually disturbed this way of life and locals would come by often for a tasty meal. Now however, this local "osteria" places all its efforts on providing the best of food, using the great recipies of the current owners' great grandmother who gave life to the eatery. Such examples include a celery and potatoe soup, vegetables plucked straight from the restaurant's own garden and a delicious tagliatelle with wonderful and refreshing tomato sauces. One must also try the succulent lamb chops with potatoes. The wine list is selective and small, but the restaurant's own Aglianico-based Turasi red is a real must. It develops refinement and elegance after an ageing of four years after the bottling. Reservation essential. Approximately 30 euros per person. To finish off, the guest must try a selection of local Irpinian cheeses and salami. Desert serves up a delicious slice of ricotta and chocolate crumble as well. The wine selection is quite adequate, and one is sure to find a selection of Aglianico-based reds and Fiano di Avellino for the whites. Prices start from 25 euros per person. The wine comes from local vineyards so expect the delicious and powerful Aglianico for reds and Fiano or Greco di Tuffa for whites. Deserts are delicious and home made. Approximately 30 euros per person. DON ALFONSOLOCATION: 11 CORSO SANT'AGATA, SANT'AGATA, (Naples 57km, Salerno 56km.) When one thinks of the relationship between the character of a chef and the quality of the food that he is capable of serving up, one must automatically think of Don Alfonso's head chef Alfonso Iaccarino. On the surface, he appears an introvert, while actually he is a man filled with a great passion . This passion finds expression in all of his dishes and recipies, which bear the all the hallmarks of real, genuine Mediterranean food. Often when these sort of passions flare, , it is easy to become too conscious of what we are trying to achieve and the risk is that the culinary experience becomes forced and false. Not so here - this is the genuine love and passion for culinary enjoyment. Included in the extensive menu are the following dishes. Pasta with a blue fish, pepperoncini (small pepperoni) and origano, meat ball cous cous with cinnamon, local fish with vanilla herb and black pepper prepared in a cherry sauce - a recipie in which the aged vinegar contrasts with the fresh cabbage and garlic sauce. Delicious baked sweet cakes and desserts to finish. The ice- cream is simple but divine, as exemplified by the reola nut, or apricot flower flavours. The choice of wine spans many borders, not just European but also Australia, Chile, California, New Zealand and South Africa. Also present are some of the very best local wines, which match up to the very best of the aforementioned countries.
